Katahdin Art Project

"A beautiful way to support the trail"

The Katahdin Art Project originated on a blustery autumn afternoon along the Appalachian Trail on Webster Cliffs in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Earl was hiking north up the trail and I, having flip-flopped, was hiking south down the trail.  The steep terrain provided a good excuse to sit and chat.  I was hoping I would run into Earl since I was hearing so much about him from other northbound hikers.  Earl was heading into the homestretch of his 50th anniversary hike, but at the age of 79, the White Mountains and Maine were still formidable obstacles yet to be overcome. I was carrying a tripod on my backpack which led the conversation to photography.  I had photographed the Pacific Crest Trail for a book and now I was photographing along the Appalachian Trail.  Earl carried a camera on his first two thru-hikes.  He mentioned he enjoyed photography but left his camera at home to lessen his load.  He said a pencil and paper were lighter but still allowed him to capture his thoughts and observations along the trail and write poetry when the muse hit him.  As we parted we didn't know at the time that our trailside chat would be the genesis of what would become a coffee table book titled The Appalachian Trail: Calling Me Back To The Hills.  The book includes Earl's narrative of his 50th anniversary hike,  along with poetry he had written throughout his life and my photography taken along the Appalachian Trail.

Working on the book provided me the opportunity to become better acquainted with Earl and his brother John.  They were setting up a foundation to direct funds from Earl's book royalties and various donations to programs dear to Earl.  The idea arose to join Earl's poetry  with my photography.  The art piece would celebrate the magnificent Mt Katahdin and raise funds for the Earl Shaffer Foundation.  Thus was born the Katahdin Art Project.
